Portola (Spanish: Portolà), officially the Federal Republic of Portola (Spanish: República Federal de Portolà) is a sovereign state in North America. The nation borders the United States to the north, and Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize to the south. With a population of 85,656,570 as of the 2016 census, it is the 16th most populous country. Portola also has the third-largest economy, only smaller than China and the United States.

The official languages are both Spanish and English. Spanish is commonly spoken throughout the southern portions of the country, and English is spoken in the northern portions.

Portola was territory of the Centralist Republic of Mexico until four republics- Texas, Rio Grande, Yucatan, and California, declared their independence from the country. They united into one large federal entity in 1846. The Republic of Senora, another republic, joined the union in 1854. Today, the five united republics have been divided into twelve.

Etymology[]

The name "Portola" comes from Gaspar de Portolá y Rovira, a Spanish soldier who was the first governor of Alta California, a province of New Spain.
