History[]
Independence of Basque Country[]
After the First World War, the Basque population of the Basque country in Northern Spain and France wanted independence from France and Spain and were not happy with the Spanish suggestion of an autonomous region within Spain. As Spain was recovering from the aftermath of a bloody world war and was not doing well financially, the Spanish part of the Basque Country was given independence. After Spain's decision to give independence to their part of the Basque Country, France decided to do the same and the 6 regions of Spain along with 3 French départements became the Basque Republic (Basquia).
Merge with Catalonians[]
After the Basque Republic was created, the Catalan population who had also wanted independence were angry at the Spanish government for giving the Basque Country independence but not Catalonia. Many protests followed but the economically weak Spain could not handle one of their richest regions leaving. The Catalan Autonomous Government threatened to keep all the tax for themselves and all Catalan workers and government officials were urged to go on strike until the Spanish let them succeed. Two months later, the Spanish gave in to the northern part of Catalonia, as long as they could keep the southern part due to the city of Barcelona, Spain's second city and most prosperous located their. 4 months later, the President of the Republic of Northern Catalunya asked the President of the Basque Republic for a unification of both countries. The Basque Republic accepted the offer in the historic Andorra la Vella Treaty.
Full Independence[]
Due to the Treaty of Andorra la Vella being signed there, Andorra la Vella was made the capital city of the new nation. Afterwards, at the agreement of France, a strip of land to the north of the country which included the cities of Pau and Perpignan was given to the new country. The country previously known as The Basque-Catalan Union had a referendum on what the new nation should be called. The suggestions were: Pyrenacia, Pyreneesia, Andoria, Catabasquia and Aneto. These were the results.
Place | Name suggestion | Suggested by | Percentage of votes |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Aneto | Jacques Piedmont | 63.81% |
2 | Pyreneesia | Robert Jierquon | 24.46% |
4 | Andoria | Antoní Mauri | 2.32% |
5 | Catabasquia | Patxi Imaz | 1.57% |
3 | Pyrenacia | Jean-Rémi Renteria | 7.84% |
